A Pause to Ponder God's Word
"Fearfully & Wonderfully Made"

"For You created my inmost being; You knit me together in my mother's womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made." (Psalm 139:13-14)

While reading an article the other day I came across this interesting tid-bit of information. If a person's sense are working normally, they can:

-- Feel on their fingertips or face a pressure that depresses their skin a bare .00004 inch.

-- See a small candle flame from 30 miles away on a clear, dark night.

-- Smell one drop of perfume diffused through a three-room apartment.

-- Taste .04 once of table salt dissolved in 530 quarts of water.

-- Feel the weight of a bee's wing falling on their cheek from less than half an inch away.

-- Distinguish among more than 300,000 different color variations.

-- Gauge the direction of a sound's origin based on a .00003-second difference in its arrival from one ear to the other.

You can't help but be awe struck by the wonder of this body of ours. These details are but a minute sampling of the bodies incredible structure and ability. But as amazing as the body is, it is more amazing that their are people who would have us believe that this incredible body was created through a process of random activity. That's right. They tell us that over millions of years through a completely random process humans came into being. Talk about faith!? Talk about deception. Scripture, right from "the beginning", leaves no room for doubt. God formed us, and breathed into us the breath of life. He created us. Our knowledge about the way babies are conceived doesn't preclude God's creative involvement of every person. We are but instruments of His creative activity; flawed by the fall, but none the less His instruments.

Why is it so difficult for so many to accept our createdness? There are numerous answers to this question, but one basic one is that denying our createdness makes us self-ruled gods. If we are not created, there is no God and we are not accountable to Him. If we are not created, there are no absolutes and we can make our own rules. The defect in this thinking is that denying our createdness, doesn't abrogate it or our accountability to our Creator. We are fearfully and wonderfully made.

The arguments for our evolutionary existence are cunningly powerful. Christians must be extremely careful not to fall prey to them. Acceptance of such deluded thinking opens the door for far greater spiritual peril. But it is just as important to remember that the Psalmist was doing more than praising God for His createdness. He was celebrating in the wonder that God infinitely cares for us. Read the whole Psalm today and join in the celebration. "Who are we that He is mindful of us?" We are His creation, created to worship and be in relationship with God Himself. Ponder on that for a while...
